Comment on Volleyball Leadership by Jeff Van Meter https://www.humanleader.com/volleyball-leadership/#comment-21 Wed, 20 Apr 2016 19:33:00 +0000 http://www.humanleader.com/?p=300#comment-21 Love the thought John and I believe you really hit on something. For those of you who are not familiar, the Big Five John is referring to are Be Honest, Be Open, Be Fearless, Be Humble and Be Real, the five core values of The Human Leader. So much of our leadership does depend on our personality and our willingness and capacity to experience something new. In my experience, the less honest, open, fearless, humble and real we are, the less willing we are to learn something new. While the more grounded we are in knowing ourselves (and accepting ourselves), the more willing we are to take risks and learn from both successes and failures. Another way of thinking about it is that we prevent ourselves from staying with it long enough because we don’t trust ourselves, we don’t trust ourselves because we are afraid, and we are afraid because we don’t have that confidence in ourselves. And around and around it goes.

Just a thought.

Your discipline and honoring your desire to write certainly paid off. I am working into that habit myself. Look forward to seeing you again soon, my friend.

It’s amazing how the little things add up. About 25 years ago I started writing in the mornings. I’m a morning guy, and at the time we owned a clothing store, so I used to get up and go straight to work on business related stuff. Truth was, I wanted to be a songwriter, not a retailer, so it was a huge shift to honour my desire to write, and give it the best moments of the day. A few degrees of change in the trajectory of a missile lands you in a whole different place over the long term. Pleased to say I’m no longer in retail!
